SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
NCTS will host a summer lecture series on Quantum Chaos in August. The target audience is graduate students and junior researchers who are motivated and interested in related subjects. These lectures are planned to start with fundamental concepts in order to prepare the audience who are less familiar with the subjects. Discussions on issues of current research, particular for those in connection with mesoscopic and atomic systems, will be emphasized.
LECTURER
Prof. Andreas Buchleitner :
Leader of the group of Nonlinear Dynamics of Quantum Systems,
Max Planck Institute of the Physics of Complex System, Dresden,
GERMANY

TOPICS
INTRODUCTION
BASICS OF CLASSICAL CHAOS
• elliptic
and hyperbolic motion, mixed phase space
• examples
from ray optics, atomic physics, mesoscopic systems
SEMICLASSICAL THEORY, VAN VLECK FORMULA, GUTZWILLER’S TRACE
FORMULA
• photo
cross sections from classical dynamics
• Rydberg
states in magnetic fields
NONLINEAR RESONANCES
• nondispersive
wave packets for robust quantum control in the external and
internal atomic degrees of freedom
• chaos
assisted tunneling
EIGENFUNCTION, DYNMICS, DYNAMICAL LOCALZATION, RANDOM MATRIX
THEORY
• strong
localization in light matter interaction, possibly with an
excursion on quantum transport in disordered media
• nonperturbative
quantum control
• Bose-Hubbard
dynamics of BEC's
PREREQUISITES
Student participants should have attended a first course in
theoretical quantum mechanics and classical mechanics. The
lecture will be flexible to adapt to the level of participants.
DATES AND FORMAT
• All
lectures will be held at National Chiao-Tung University campus,
CS247.
• The
series consists of five two-hour lectures from 10AM to noon in
each day from August 14 to August 18.
• The
schedule is designed to provide plenty of discussion time for
the participants.
The deadline for application is June 30, 2006. See the
above webpage for registration form.
If you need assistance in arranging lodging in Hsinchu please
apply early.
